Oyster Reefs around Sargent in East Matagorda Bay
Cold Weather means Oysters and fishing under the Lights on the Canals of Sargent and Caney Creek. This is that time of the year for the East Matagorda Bay Oyster reefs. Time to make some Gumbo and enjoy it.
Winter is the best time to harvest the reefs around Sargent Texas. These incredible East Matagorda Bay Oyster's are some of the best tasting in the United States. Plump, fat, briny and just the right background salt-sweet that make them so prized. For the last few year they have been heavily harvested throughout our Bay System....
Hurricane Harvey and East Matagorda Bay
Harvey and his surge effects hit the Gulf Coast Town of Sargent today. Sargent is located on the northern part of East Matagorda Bay. Sargent has some high water but missed the brunt of Storm. Our hopes and prayers go out to those who were hurt by the storm. Rains still falling and we are watching for flood threat.
These are some photos from Friday the 25 of August, 2017.

Sargent Mitchell's Cut From The Air
This week we take to the air over Mitchell's Cut in Sargent. I have been working on my boat. So instead of writing about Sargent we got you up in the air for a birds eye view of Mitchell's Cut. This incredible footage is about 5 minutes long and really shows how wonderful Sargent is to be the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico and East Matagorda Bay. I have loaded two Air Tours and one labels the Sargent Beach locations so you can enjoy the Second even more. The second is the best Arial footage I have seen of Sargent.

In the Fall the North East Winds can disorient bait fish and shrimp when they pass though near Sargent. Cool Fronts bring this kind of wind. This is a good thing. Bait can "stack up" in different parts of the bay. This attracts big fish. Look for birds check out south shore line and work the drift map This weekend look for drifts off South Shore. The Surf off Mitchell cut still producing fish and bait. So all around Sargent tides Winds and plenty of fish. Look for some flounder starting to run with this new cool front. Remember to count to 10 before setting your hook when you have flounder....
Sargent Texas is surrounded by some incredible wildlife refuges. This insures incredible bird watching, hunting and fishing recreation around Sargent into the future.
These preserves include the San Bernard Wildlife Refuge to our east. Big Boggy to our west which included Dresser Point or Bird Island. It is a major rookery for Pelicans and other seabirds. As you head north of Sargent along Cayney Creek to the east run into Dance Bayou Forested Track which is one of the last great intact Bottomland Southern Forest left in the United States. Yes we are extremely lucky because many bottomlands...
Watch Tides this week. I would fish the surf around the Sargent Cliffs on the Beach. Trout also are good on live shrimp over shell in East Matagorda bay all week. The Redfish run is starting to heat up around Mitchells cut too. Reds are really starting to run. Croaker are hot now too. If you never caught a two or three pound croaker this could be your time of the year to do it.
The Croaker run is going at full speed and they are huge. The kids really love catching them. I do too.

Remember There is no reason to keep huge Bull Redfish or Trout....
Matagorda county and Camelot Forest Subdivision are really happy that they have new Bridge. These are some photos that were submitted by Gary, Don and John as they fished for nice Kitty Cats above and below the bridge. The bridge helps access to Camelot Forest. The old Bridge was made of Wood and this new one is Cement.
Sargent Maps and History
Way back in 1963 the Army Corp of Engineers decided to cut a channel into the Gulf of Mexico at Sargent. This cut became known as McCabes Cut. As you can see from this 1944 photograph from the Texas Land office there was already an oxbow lake that is just like Old Dead Caney Creek.
McCabes cut was originaly 40 feet wide and 4 feet deep and over the years grew like a monster. The Cut in 1988 was 300 feet wide and 30 feet deep. By this time Barges and Boats were being sucked out into the Gulf when the tide was right. It was like a giant vacuum cleaner sucking...
East Matagorda Bay Map.
Where to catch fish around Sargent Texas? Spring fishing on incoming tides around East Matagorda Bay. Good tides this weekend for fishing Caney Creek, Sargent Beach and Bay.
Sargent gets large inflow of water to East Matagorda Bay because it is located at Michells Cut. The cut provides the most direct flow of fresh salt water into the East Matagorda Bay. Most of the delivery of the salt water takes place along the intracoastal canals and the reefs that are adjacent or close to them.
Please realize that large drum and Trout are spawning now. If you catch any really...
